Live Action: The Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters

The chess world's eyes are currently glued to India! The Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters just kicked off on July 16th. This is an elite classical round-robin event, and the field is absolutely stacked with seven of the eight competitors rated above 2700.

The first round already delivered fireworks: Alireza Firouzja drew first blood by defeating Pranesh M, while heavyweights like Gukesh D and Nihal Sarin played out a draw. Fans are also closely watching Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who is competing here before catching a flight for an intense team match later this month.

The Ultimate Team Showdown: USA vs. Uzbekistan

Mark your calendars for July 27-28, 2026! In what is being called a massive preview for the upcoming Chess Olympiad, two of the top four chess nations in the world will go head-to-head in Miami.

This will be a rapid and blitz Scheveningen format match. The contrast in the teams is incredible:

  • Team USA boasts massive experience (average age 38) and features world top-10 players Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, and Wesley So.

  • Team Uzbekistan is fielding a young, hungry squad (average age 21) led by absolute superstars Javokhir Sindarov and Nodirbek Abdusattorov.

This is a must-watch clash of generations and styles!

FIDE Rating Shakeup: Carlsen Bleeds Points but Stays on Top

The July 2026 FIDE rating list was just published, and it came with a shock. Magnus Carlsen dropped a massive 18 rating points following his performance at Norway Chess.

However, there is no need to panic for the GOAT's fans. Even with the drop, Carlsen remains the only player in the world with a 2800+ rating, sitting more than 30 points ahead of Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana. He is also celebrating a historic milestone this month: 15 unbroken years as the world's number-one player!

Meanwhile, Indian phenom R Praggnanandhaa saw a 15-point rating boost following his spectacular comeback victory at Norway Chess, pushing his rating to a formidable 2750.
